Early retirement wasn't enough for Bart Kendrick, who put his years of marketing and communications experience to work doing national outreach for Peace Corps.
The fishing was lousy, bait was getting scarce, I had finished the house project and was tired of piece-work when it came along. Early retirement wasn't what it was cracked up to be. A friend tired of listening to my no-fish tales suggested I apply for a Public Affairs position with the Peace Corps and, instead of griping, get a job that would put my 30 years in media to work for something worthwhile.
So I completed the application and answered questions until blue in the face and submitted the application and forgot about it. That was early January 2003, and in February I was called for an interview. I started in the New York office in late March.
Since then, I have worked in a second public affairs position in D.C. and two years ago, I started as the National Outreach and Diversity Manager at Peace Corps. Now, nearing the end of six years of service, the work has been the best use of my time and talents.
Never bashful or afraid to take a second encore, I am searching for another position in public service, and I am hopeful of finding something that involves recruiting volunteers to public service.
