After 25 years in high tech, I've decided my next mission involves founding a non-profit organization to serve a special needs community. I've poked around the web hoping to finding a "cookbook" for starting a non-profit but I thought perhaps the Encore Nation might be a good source for qualified leads.

There are lots of resources available for social entrepreneurs in general. I'd recommend social edge, of course.

Idealist.org published a guide for sector-switchers about a year ago that includes a section on starting a nonprofit organization. Steven Joiner is one of the authors.
I also recommend Thomas Wolf's book on Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the Twenty-First Century, which has some very practical advice on building a board, etc.
