Response to Andrew Yarrow on early retirement.

Yarrow is an academic moron. Its great for someone who earns his bread outside the pressures of the private sector and their demoralizing effects on older workers to suggest that early retirement is a selfish act.
First, there are many solid folks out there for whom retirement means an encore career. That's great. Primarily they can afford to do what they want or feel they should and second, they are engaging with our ongoing social contract and community.
Still, as Yarrow could never know nor recognize, there are thousands if not millions of us out there who have been chopped to shreds after years of service, sacrifice and hard work who are now wondering how they will survive or where they can find a way back into a minimal paycheck.
Age discrimination is huge. Also there are really no road maps for reinvention that offer boomers or young seniors clear career paths where dignity and self esteem can flourish amidst lower salaries and new opportunity.
Also, folks who retire early can serve as unpaid mentors in local schools. This idiot needs to get a life and get away from his self annointed computer scribbles. Life is more complicated and challenging than he supposes.
