TIME magazine recently featured Troops to Teachers, a Department of Education-Department of Defense partnership that places returning veterans in high-need U.S. classrooms. The program is especially successful at recruiting men and members of minority groups to serve in math, science, and special education roles -- filling critical gaps in urban schools.
The program's supporters say that Troops to Teachers "needs to enlarge its talent pool in order to attract the waves of younger troops returning from hot spots such as Iraq and Afghanistan and making the not-always-easy transition to civilian life." Two members of the House of Representatives, Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Tom Petri (R-WI), plan to introduce legislation that would do just that.
David Bank, editor of Encore.org, has written about the Troops to Teachers model on this site and in Stanford Social Innovation Review.
