Community colleges are creating new and more flexible pathways to becoming second-career teachers. That’s good news for prospective encore teachers who balk at the requirements of traditional teaching colleges, many of which require four years of full-time study even for those who already have a college degree.

Four-year teaching institutions are still the norm for most, but more alternative pathways to teacher certification are popping up around the country. Many are run by community colleges. These alternative programs often move candidates into their own classrooms after a shorter period of training while continuing studies on nights and weekends. Many pack other benefits as well, such as increased flexibility.

Teaching is emerging as the encore career of choice, as career switchers flock to teacher training programs around the country.

The surge of interest is being driven by both passion and practicality, say program managers who are trying to respond to the increased demand from people eager to get into the classroom. The chronic teacher shortage, particularly in math, science, special education and inner-city schools, makes education seem like a safe long-term choice in a tumultuous economy, despite budget cuts and even layoffs in many school districts. Experts anticipate as many as 1.5 million teaching vacancies over the next decade.

Intergenerational Learning Teams Could Create Millions of Encore Careers

The National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF) is calling for the creation of cross-generational learning teams consisting of novice and veteran educators, interns, online educators and digital media specialists, community members and industry veterans with specific subject expertise to replace solo teachers in the nation’s classrooms. A new report, “Learning Teams: Creating What’s Next,” touts the model as a tonic for teacher turnover, student performance and school success.

What’s more, says Tom Carroll, president of NCTAF, the learning teams model could create millions of encore career opportunities for individuals eager to pursue meaningful work in education.

Mark Roosevelt became a school district superintendent via an unusual route: He went back to school.

The former Massachusetts state legislator, whose great-grandfather was President Teddy Roosevelt, had helped craft a landmark education reform act that restructured the way the state funds and manages its public schools. But he had no teaching background when he was invited to apply for the Broad Superintendents Academy.

If anybody needs evidence of the cost-effectiveness of the major national service legislation that awaits only President Obama’s signature, it’s in a new study that shows that elementary school students with Experience Corps tutors made over 60 percent more progress in crucial reading skills than students without Experience Corps tutors.

A couple of my previous posts have highlighted recent reports about the high cost — both human and economic — of the education achievement gap. The NYC-based Education Equality Project is teaming up with the United Negro College Fund, the National Council of La Raza, the National Action Network, and others for a national call to action to CLOSE THE GAP on the 55th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. The event is on Saturday, May 16th, 10 am at the White House Ellipse.

“The Economic Impact of the Achievement Gap in America’s Schools,” a new report from McKinsey & Co., examines the dimensions of four gaps in education:
(1) between the U.S. and other nations, (2) between African-American and Hispanic students and white students, (3) between students of different income levels, and (4) between similar students schooled in different regions or systems.

Teaching has emerged as perhaps the most popular encore career path, and would-be teachers now have several new resources to help them get prepared.

EducationDegree.com lists more than 20,000 teacher education degree and certificate programs throughout the U.S., allowing users to search by specialty, state or type of degree. The California Teachers Corps, as part of its effort to place 100,000 new teachers by 2020, has identified 70 alternative-certification programs in the state.
