Conference Agenda

Encore 2011 brought together 200 of the nation’s leading activists in the encore movement – from local communities, education, business, philanthropy, government, nonprofits and media. It was a forward-thinking event that explored the key question: What commitments are needed to realize the promise of the encore stage of life and work, so that all Americans will have the opportunity to achieve their own encore aspirations and society will reap the benefits of encore talent to tackle our most pressing needs?

2011 Purpose Prize Awards
Ceremony honoring the 2011 Purpose Prize winners – five people over 60 who are committed to changing the world through their encore careers. Learn more about The Purpose Prize here. Featuring Purpose Prize jurors:

  • Jane Pauley, Veteran journalist and television anchor

Conference opener presenting a future vision for encore as a powerful new norm in American life – one that encompasses the encore years as a new stage of life and the encore career as the highest expression of its possibilities. It set the stage for the conference and called for new thinking and new commitments to make the most of this encore opportunity. Featuring:

Inspiring talk exploring how different ways of thinking can lead to new encore solutions and open up the door for new types of commitments. Featuring:

Encore Innovations Express
Fast-paced exchange of best practices and promising innovations from activists who are leading the encore movement in their communities, institutions and spheres of influence. Featuring:

Charting the Encore Stage of Life: Work and Purpose in the Wake of the Great Recession
Is work that combines passion, purpose, and a paycheck central to what people want in a new stage of life? What trends, opportunities, and challenges exist in 2011 as we work together to shape how our society views the time after midlife? This session featured Jim Emerman talking about brand-new Civic Ventures research sponsored by MetLife Foundation, reflections from civic entrepreneur Eric Liu, and comments from other thought leaders.

Encore Dialogue
Small group dialogues to reflect on and respond to the day's sessions. What are the implications of the latest research findings for the work of the people gathered here? How could what’s happening in the field the change the picture described by the research? What insights are you gaining from what you've heard today? How does your own experience relate to observations in today's sessions?

4:30-5:30 pm
Encore Breakthroughs
A thought-provoking dialogue presenting different perspectives on what it will take to accelerate the encore movement and spur innovation to strengthen the future encore agenda. What can be learned from other movements? What opportunities and challenges face our multi-generational society? What will be the Boomers' legacy? Featuring a conversation between David Bornstein and Tina Rosenberg, co-authors of the New York Times "Fixes" column, moderated by educator and civic entrepreneur Eric Liu.

Friday Night Encore!
Dessert and a performance brought by MusicianCorps, a fabulous Bay Area-based program that trains and places musicians to serve full-time as teachers and mentors in low-performing public schools, youth centers, and other high-need community settings.

Affinity groups organized by interest area wil identify new solutions and encore commitments to advance encore as a new social norm.

11:30 – 12:00 noon
Call to Action
Interactive closing session focused on the actions and commitments to move the encore movement forward.
