Many older adults thinking about going back to school have questions about financial aid. In The Chronicle of Higher Education, Beckie Supiano offers helpful tips to financial aid advisers working with mature students, suggesting that they communicate early with students, giving them a complete picture of how the financial aid system works and their options.
The advisers with whom Supiano spoke also advise giving students frequent updates about their financial aid status, including loan amounts and projected monthly payments; varying communication methods to include nonelectronic formats for those who are not yet comfortable with technology; and working with other campus departments, such as academic advisement, to make sure students know how to remain eligible for aid.
