Williams, who has counseled thousands of job seekers during her 20-plus years as a career search specialist, translates her advice into action by providing exercises (with workbook pages) to help you identify your skills and accomplishments and plan ahead for tough interview questions. Her advice on creating a 30-second "branding intro" (otherwise known as your "elevator speech") is particularly helpful. "It is essential you spend some time creating a brief statement that defines YOU: your unique strengths, qualities, experience level and areas of expertise," she writes.

In a chapter called "Knock 'em Dead Interviews," she coaches readers through the five parts of an interview: icebreaker, background probe, work history review, your questions and "the close."
