Land the Job You Love

Written by M. Eileen Williams, who is known for her "Feisty Side of 50" blog and radio show, Land the Job You Love! 10 Surefire Strategies for Jobseekers Over 50 focuses on getting in the door to a prospective employer and landing a job offer. It is, she notes, an "inside job" to find a new career, and age can be an advantage because of all the contacts you've made over the years.

Williams, who has counseled thousands of job seekers during her 20-plus years as a career search specialist, translates her advice into action by providing exercises (with workbook pages) to help you identify your skills and accomplishments and plan ahead for tough interview questions. Her advice on creating a 30-second "branding intro" (otherwise known as your "elevator speech") is particularly helpful. "It is essential you spend some time creating a brief statement that defines YOU: your unique strengths, qualities, experience level and areas of expertise," she writes.

In a chapter called "Knock 'em Dead Interviews," she coaches readers through the five parts of an interview: icebreaker, background probe, work history review, your questions and "the close." She even provides thoughtful answers to awkward questions for boomers such as "What do you plan to be doing in five years?" (Answer: Grow with the organization.)
