At present I am working as a trained "end of life" volunteer as part of the Palliative Care Team at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York City and as a trained Health Navigator paid volunteer at Beth Israel Medical Center.  My roles differ at the two institutions from bringing comfort to terminally ill patients and caregivers to navigating recently released patients through healthcare system entitlements and services to help them lead independent lives and meet the goals of their discharge plans.

Electrical Engineer ; Teacher & tutor of math & physics

I am about to retire after nearly 40 years in electrical engineering at Bell Labs, Motorola, and Intel.  I discovered teaching in my last 5 years at Intel, teaching technical subjects to non-technical people.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it and how positive the feedback from students has been.

My story began in 1961 flying for TWA, we wore hats, gloves

and spoke a second language.  Then I worked for  ABC-TV in NYC,

Four years later I married and have two grown sons.

During my time as a devoted mother I volunteered for my

community, bred and raised labrador retrievers, and worked

for TWA recruiting flight attendants.

My hobbies are reading, gardening (orchids are my passion)

hiking, traveling (have been to India twice) learning new

languages (two weeks in Paris) and origami.

The three leading causes of death for 15- to 24-year-olds are auto crashes, homicides and suicides. Alcohol is a key factor in all three. Sixty percent of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol-related — 8,000 deaths each year. Teenagers are bombarded with negative imagery. They are the largest group of frequent moviegoers, and they devour TV and commercial music. Irresponsible drinking by glamorous young celebrities defines pop culture today. As early as grade school, kids feel pressure to drink. The most powerful influence of all on them are their peers.

When I met my wife in 1990, she was a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and I was a Transportation Specialist for the Department of Defense. As the father of two daughters from a previous marriage, I had always been an active participant and volunteer in their school activities, and when Janice got transferred to Portland, Oregon, I decided to make education a full-time commitment.
