Phyllis Segal
President Obama announced today his intent to nominate seven individuals to the board of directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service, including Phyllis Segal, a vice president of Civic Ventures. Encore.org is an initiative of Civic Ventures, a nonprofit think tank that is leading the call to engage millions of experienced individuals in becoming a force for social change.
Upon her appointment, pending approval by the U.S. Senate, Segal will help guide a key federal agency dedicated to engaging Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service that addresses critical community needs through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs. John Gomperts, who until recently served as president of Civic Ventures, heads AmeriCorps, the largest national service program.
Segal also serves on the boards of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, and Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program, which was established in memory of her husband, Eli, who was the first CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. From 1994 to 2000, she was chair of the Federal Labor Relations Authority.
Segal has also served as deputy attorney general of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, founding legal director of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and on the faculties of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School and New York University School of Law. She holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
Other nominees to the Corporation for National and Community Service’s board of directors are Rick Christman, CEO of Employment Solutions Inc.; Jane Hartley, CEO of Observatory Group LLC; Marguerite Kondracke, former president and CEO of America’s Promise Alliance; Matthew McCabe, a participant in Teach For America; John Podesta, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress; and Lisa Quiroz, senior vice president of corporate responsibility for Time Warner Inc.
In announcing the nominees, President Obama said, “These men and women are true leaders who understand that America faces an unprecedented set of challenges, and that what’s required to overcome those challenges and build a new foundation for economic growth and prosperity doesn’t come from Washington alone – it comes from every American willing to make a difference in communities across this country.”
