The use of technology has allowed us to multi-task, speak to friends and family in far away lands and shop til we drop, but you should think twice before you use mobile technology to apply for open positions. Here’s why:
1. Lack of Customization
Mobile apps are meant for speed, so when you see a position you like while on the go, all you have to do is press “send resume.”
But that kind of rapid response won’t help you in your job search.
Boomers and millennials alike both know this age-old career tip: Don’t send the same resume/cover letter over and over again. Customize both your cover letter and resume to highlight specific skills and experience relevant to each job you apply for.
Mobile apps aren’t built to allow for customization on the go. Do yourself a favor and stand out from the masses -- customize every single time.
2. My Social Security Number is 745-89-5...
If you’re concerned about compromising critical personal information, then usage of mobile apps in your job search may not be the best option for you. Hackers and other not-so-nice people who want to phish for your personal information have developed some pretty sneaky behind-the-scenes methods to obtain it.
If you’re not aware of the malicious activity that can occur from mobile app usage, take a look at this recent story. My advice: use your common sense. If something looks the slightest bit questionable, steer clear.
3. First Impressions Are Lasting Impressions
Imagine this: If you were a hiring manager and you received hundreds, if not thousands of poorly-written, cookie-cutter resumes, you’d probably think something along the lines of, “Wow... does anyone care anymore?! People have gotten complacent and LAZY!”
When you’re up against Ramen noodle-eating college grads, do what you can to make a great first impression. Using a mobile app, while easy and convenient, isn’t the best plan of action when trying to get the position of your dreams.
There’s a better way.
Consider online sites like LinkedIn and BranchOut (it’s an app within Facebook) to network online for open positions. Not familiar with either of these professional networking sites? Here’s a quick snapshot:
LinkedIn: This website is the world’s largest online professional networking hub. With more than 135 million members in over 200 countries and territories, this site is growing at the rate of two members per second.
LinkedIn is the most popular social networking site among boomers. Users post resumes, search for jobs and join interest groups. Recruiters search, too. Check out the Encore Careers group there.
BranchOut: Technically, this is an ‘app,’ but it’s not a mobile one, at least not yet, and it is reputable. If you’re inclined to spend your online time browsing Facebook, then this is the platform for you.
BranchOut, currently the largest professional networking ‘app’ on Facebook, allows you to post your resume, search for jobs and more. Check out the press the site has been getting.
