Need a little inspiration?
The Guiding Lights Weekend conference in Seattle, March 25 - 26, promises to rejuvenate your desire to make a difference.
The guest list includes some big names in social change:
- Van Jones, co-founder of Green for All, President Obama’s former green jobs adviser and author of The Green-Collar Economy
- Jerilyn Brusseau, creator of Cinnabon, who established PeaceTable to develop shared culinary experiences among different cultures
- Dan Savage, an activist in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and author of The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant
This year’s conference will focus on civics, from how policy is made to how citizens come together to bring about change. In a keynote speech, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan (via live video feed) will talk about the state of civics in schools.
The conference website urges you to be among “hundreds of on-the-ground leaders, front-line practitioners, educators, activists, artists, national and local policymakers, social entrepreneurs and great citizens from all sectors and from all across the country as you explore and learn concrete ways to sharpen your skills and deepen your impact on civic life.”
The Guiding Lights Weekend is sponsored by The Guiding Lights Network, a Seattle-based mentoring advocacy organization. The regular price for the full conference is $325, though there are discounted prices for students, seniors and groups.
