Big Idea

The community health house model – which stresses community and personal responsibility and emphasizes cost-saving preventive care – can play a pivotal role in efforts to eliminate health disparities in the Mississippi Delta. I propose to establish the Mississippi Delta Community Health House Network, a pilot demonstration in three local counties to prove viability. The selected tricounty area is among the most impoverished areas in the nation; nearly all social, economic and health indicators paint a picture of a region in crisis. Recipients of public assistance will be selected from the target service areas to undergo training and certification to become proactive wellness advocates who will educate residents on proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

About Lynn McGee

I first witnessed blatant poverty when I was a child, riding down a Mississippi Delta road. The images ignited a passion within me to help improve the quality of life for people living there. Since then, I’ve worked for two decades in human resources and community development. I’ve managed multimillion dollar community and organization development programs that mobilized community stakeholders across the region to transform their lives and communities. I believe that these life experiences and my relationships with community partners have uniquely prepared me to coordinate the Delta Community Health House Network efforts.
