BREAKTHROUGH EMPLOYERS: Online course helps nonprofits capture experience

Temple University for Intergenerational Learning is offering a free online course to help nonprofits tap the talents and energy of people 50 and older.

The three-hour, interactive course, called “Capturing Experience,” gives specific strategies for shaping paid and unpaid opportunities for older adults seeking jobs with a social purpose. It explains how to create incentives, market positions and incorporate learning activities into service positions.

The course was developed from current research and field experience that shows that many people over age 50 are looking for ways to connect with and contribute to their communities. Verizon Foundation was the lead funder; HRC Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service provided additional support.

The first module, “People 50+: One Size Doesn’t Fill All,” does not require registration, but subsequent modules do. Individuals who complete the course receive a certificate when they submit the final part of the survey.

“This course was excellent and informative. It provided an incredible amount of information and the tools to apply it. The interactive components made the course fun,” said Rebecca Schwartz, volunteer program coordinator for Sharsheret, a nonprofit serving young Jewish women living with breast cancer.
