Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot Opens ‘The Third Chapter’

The changing landscape of later life is the terrain of the new book by renowned sociologist Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot. In The Third Chapter: Passion, Risk, and Adventure in the 25 Years After 50, she focuses on the creative and purposeful learning that is possible as we grow older.

Lawrence-Lightfoot spent two years interviewing men and women in their 50s, 60s and 70s to document new ways in which individuals are embracing life before true retirement to try out new careers that often defy traditional norms. Among her subjects are a lawyer who leaves a law firm for divinity school, a mechanical engineer who becomes an artist, a physicist who becomes a middle school teacher and a businesswoman who returns to international relief work.

Marc Freedman of Civic Ventures calls The Third Chapter “the best book yet about the changing life course,” and “an inspiring roadmap for individual and social renewal in the emerging third chapter.”

Lawrence-Lightfoot is a professor at Harvard University. She is the first African-American woman in Harvard’s history to have an endowed professorship named in her honor.

Her upcoming appearances that are open to the public include:

New Encore cable access TV Show Launching in Boston

February 19, 2009 - 12:56pm

I’m delighted to hear about S L-L’s new book and would love to review it for my blog, Retirement As You Want It.

Also, I am launching a new local access TV show, called Alivelihood: New Careers As We Age” on March 5, 2009, on www.BATV.org. I am looking for people who have compelling stories about leaving or downsizing from their mid-years’ careers and have transitioned into encore careers. They must be willing to travel to the Boston area to be taped.

Please contact me at Karma@LifeSpringCoaching.com if you have any suggestions. If the contact works out, I offer you a complimentary 1-hour telephone coaching session.

New Careers as we age...

May 10, 2009 - 11:41pm

Hi
I am interested in talking about my new career as a BnB owner/operator (Inn-Keeper) of a lovely Inn on the coast of Maine, that I undertook at the age of 59.
I am a former clinical research coordinator (nurse) having escaped (dropped out a bit late) from NYC and the land of pharmaceutical industry “research”. I am also the mother of five, divorced for 20 yrs etc etc.
Yes, I would be able to travel to Boston… and would love to encourage other women or men to follow their dream…
Looking forward to hearing more about your program.
