More Funding for the Peace Corps?

Amy Podhast, whose "The New Service" blog follows developments in national service, reports that expansion of the Peace Corps appears likely. That's good news for individuals seeking encore careers with the organization, which has experienced a surge in applications from people over age 50.

She notes that Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, announced on Chris Matthews' "Hardball" show that the proposed Peace Corps budget would increase from $340 million to $450 million, allowing the Peace Corps to expand to 20 countries.

Lowey said Congress will vote on the funding next week.
