Angela Blackwell, the head of PolicyLink, had a first-rate article in Salon News.

She argued for a big, smart and fair stimulus with a 1% -2% set aside for job training. The stimulus’s package should emphasize meeting urban and rural needs and focus on people and jobs.

Obama Leading by Modelling and Showing Respect

On December 17th I posted a comment on a Salon article dealing with Obama’s appointment of Arne Duncan as Secretary of Education. The announcement took place at a Chicago elementary school. Obama had a conversation with first to fourth graders.

In a rousing call to action at the Encore Careers Summit, Gara LaMarche (at left) urged older Americans to heed the call to service that was a hallmark of President-elect Barack Obama’s campaign as well as push for policy changes that will help launch encore careers. His speech was featured on the home page of The Huffington Post.

As president and CEO of The Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the few foundations focused on aging, and as a former leader with Human Rights Watch and other organizations working for positive social change, LaMarche has watched social activism ebb and flow in many countries.

“Make the most of this moment,” he told the audience. “Respond to the call of a new president when he asks what we can do for our country, a country in which many of us are happily surprised to find we take a newfound pride.

The Stimulus Package and Encore

The economic crisis will lead in all probability to two economic stimulus packages. Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff to President-Elect Obama, spoke to an operational hope when he said crises can be turned into opportunities. My hope asks, how can the stimulus packages advance the Encore idea and program?

I want to begin a discussion on www.encore.org based on people’s experiences and ideas. In turn these can be incorporated into the stimulus legislation and its implementation. Here are a few thoughts to get us started.
