9:00 am "The Encore Journey" This panel, moderated by New York Times Shifting Careers columnist Marci Alboher, will examine the personal and spiritual dimensions of the transition to an encore career. Featured panelists are:

11:00 am "Present at the Creation" This panel, moderated by former national and foreign editor of The Washington Post and founder of PublicAffairs Peter Osnos, will look at what it means to create a new social category and movement. In discussion with leaders of the civil rights, women's and environmental movements, we will examine what the movement for encore careers can learn from those movements and how people in encore careers can help advance their critical unfinished business. Featured panelists are:
  • Suzanne Braun Levine, author and founding editor of Ms magazine
  • Denis Hayes, president of the Bullitt Foundation and founder of Earth Day
  • Clayborne Carson, Professor of History and Director, Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute, Stanford University


12:30 pm Lunch and networking

1:30 pm "Leadership in the Second Half of Life" James Joseph, Professor of the Practice of Public Policy Studies at Duke University and founder of the United States – Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values at Duke and the University of Cape Town, and former US ambassador to South Africa, will discuss what emerging leaders in encore careers can learn from leadership approaches pioneered by Nelson Mandela.

2:00 pm Working Groups: Attendees will pick one of the following working groups
  • Supporting the personal needs of aspiring encore careerists
  • Creating encore transition services and programs
  • Integrating encore careerists into the nonprofit workforce
  • Developing encore public policy
  • Portraying encore careers in the media
  • Creating local encore community initiatives
  • Building a role for corporations in supporting encore career opportunities
  • Creating encore careers in an economic downtown
  • Creating encore careers in education and youth development
  • Creating encore careers in the health care field
  • Creating encore careers in the green economy
  • Creating encore careers in community and economic development
  • Creating encore careers in public service
  • Creating encore careers in international service
  • Creating encore careers in social entrepreneurship
