It’s National Employ Older Workers Week (Sept. 18-24), and I hope that I can count on you to help spread the word!

An annual event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, National Employ Older Workers Week is a call to action for employers and employees alike to recognize the value and necessity of experienced workers in our nation’s workforce.


With unemployment high and retirement savings low, hundreds of thousands of people over 50 are turning to college programs to boost their job skills. But given the rising costs of tuition, is it worth the money? Marci Alboher, VP at Civic Ventures, offers advice for this quickly growing demographic.

Sabbaticals for Nonprofit Leaders More Important in Tough Times

Last year, 40 percent of U.S. residents 55 and older were in the workforce, a percentage that has grown since 1993. And the percentage of workers older than 65 has continued to rise, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute's analysis of census figures. With this surge comes the necessity for encore careers as a means to continue working in the second half of life.

Wrapping up a three-year initiative to boost course offerings and resources targeted to community college students age 50 and up, the American Association of Community Colleges said in a November report that its Plus 50 program schools shifted dramatically from offering personal enrichment courses for retirees to awarding targeted certificates aimed at current job openings in their communities.

Civic Ventures Encore College Initiative grantees are developing programs that create educational pathways to encore careers for people 50 and older. Effective planning has been essential to efforts to sustain and, in some cases, expand these programs. Below are seven tips for community college administrators.

  1. Start with the end in mind.
