Mark Judge, who worked 22 years in children's publishing before he was laid off, was recommended for an Encore Fellowship after volunteering for 600 hours over more than seven months with Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT), an education nonprofit. Now the California resident is working part time as a paid Encore Fellow for Youth Science Institute while also working part time for RAFT.

Volunteering is one of 10 tips Johnson gives in her ABC News report, which focuses on strategies that led to jobs for five people who were coping with long-term unemployment after a layoff.
