2011 Encore Careers Research Methodology

The Civic Ventures research reports funded by MetLife Foundation are based on research conducted by Penn Schoen Berland from June to October, 2011. The research consists of three separate quantitative surveys:

  • A Nationally Representative Telephone Survey of Americans ages 44-70
  • An Online Survey of Americans Currently in or Interested in Encore Careers ages 44-70 and currently living in the United States
  • An Online Survey of Potential Entrepreneurs age 44-70 and currently living in the United States

The telephone survey is large enough on its own to present a reliable profile of the complete cohort of American adults within the 44 to 70 age range. The online surveys delve into additional subject matter with audiences who are of particular interest. The online surveys have been properly weighted to match the demographic composition of Americans 44 to 70 as revealed in the telephone survey.

A similar telephone survey of N=1,063 respondents ages 44 to 70 was conducted in 2008 by Peter D. Hart Research Associates for Civic Ventures and MetLife Foundation and is used periodically as a baseline throughout the reports.
