Big Idea

The unemployment rate for veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan is rising – 11.7 percent as of December 2010 (higher than the national jobless rate of 9.4 percent). Difficulty in finding a job can affect a soldier's mental health. There has been a dramatic increase in suicides among young veterans. It can be far easier for a veteran to deal with family issues and reintegrating into civilian life when he or she has a job. Through the New Jersey-based Tip of the Arrow Foundation, a network of volunteer professionals provides returning Army Reservists and National Guardsman one-on-one counseling throughout the job search process.
