Robert Ward's 'My Encore Moment' Story
From School Guidance Counselor to Registered Nurse
Lewes, Delaware
![]() |
Retired guidance counselor Robert Ward was inspired by his wife, a longtime nurse, to join her in her profession.
I have held many jobs since I was 11 years old. My first job out of high school was in a belt factory putting buckles on belts, an instant motivator to attend college. I spent 6.5 years as a Naval Officer, 22 years in public education, and after an early retirement decided to pursue a career in nursing since I still had more to give.
My wife, a lifetime nurse, inspired me by her love for, and dedication to, her work. I have been an Registered Nurse now for more than 14 years and still work part time. I find my new career as rewarding as I expected and am happy with my decision. It is the right balance of work and retirement.
I presently work in noninvasive cardiology, performing stress tests on both in-patients and out-patients. The day can run from mundane to panic in five seconds flat.
