Something Bigger -- Our Purpose In Life

In a perfect world, we would fully understand what Deepak Chopra calls the Law of Dharma. According to Chopra (1994), the Sanskrit term dharma roughly translates “the purpose of life.” The components of this law tell us that we are spirits having human experiences, and that each of us has a unique talent, a means of doing something in a special way better than anyone else on the planet. Finally, after recognizing our spirit and our unique gift, we find ultimate fulfillment in assisting others through loving service.

For me, my Encore Career is something bigger than extending on my past accolades such as they are… its about doing something radically different that allows me to be fully alive. It’s about passion; it’s about leaving a mark and changing a not so wonderful world; it’s about belonging and; it may be about, but is definitely more important than the bucks. It’s about my Dharma, my purpose in life.

So tell me what makes your life better today than yesterday and not as good as tomorrow. It’s your Encore, it’s your purpose in life, come on and share it with us!

Dharma

I feel most myself, most joy and energy, when I am contributing to the accomplishment of a mission larger than the people involved in its pursuit; when I have a least one person whom I trust who is in this with me; and when I am working to build community. The last is the most important by far, but I believe that the first two are necessary[?] foundations.

The three together allow me the freedom to give the best I got, to brush past most of my egocentric hangups, and get me the help and support I need to deal with the others (the ones I do indeed get hung up on).

Building community is an act of joy and release, of making do or making better and moving on in either case. I like the difficulty of letting go and moving on when I am not getting what I want, and when I am. Embracing that difficulty brings freedom and maintains my energy. I suspect it is my Dharma.

"We find ultimate fulfillment in assisting others through loving service" — I feel this presence in my current work.
