The book traces the experience and lessons of a set of companies across the globe that are managing to pull this integration off, from Cemex in Mexico, Banco Real in Brazil, and Proctor and Gamble.

A report from The Conference Board Boomers are Ready for Nonprofits, but are Nonprofits Ready for Boomers? found that nonprofits lag behind the government and private sectors in retaining skilled potential retirees within their organizations and actively recruiting older hires from other sectors.

Hewitt Associates survey on Phased Retirement Programs

A survey by Hewitt Associates released in late July 2008 found that 61 percent of the 140 mid- to large-size employers polled have developed or plan to create a special program to retain, targeted near-retirement employees. But very few – only 5 percent – have formalized those programs.

Employee Benefits Research Institute 2008 Recent Retirees Survey

The Employee Benefits Research Institute reported on a survey of 5,722 employees that found 61 percent might be induced to delay retirement if they were offered flexible hours, more pay or other incentives. Yet only 26 percent said they have been approached by their employers to stay longer.

Capturing Experience

Temple University for Intergenerational Learning is offering a free online course to help nonprofits tap the talents and energy of people 50 and older. The three-hour, interactive course, called “Capturing Experience,” gives specific strategies for shaping paid and unpaid opportunities for older adults seeking jobs with a social purpose.
