Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco
Launch Pad Finalist
Big Idea
The increase of obesity and diabetes in young people is a critical national issue. Prevention is the way to break this cycle. I have been volunteering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco for four years. For the past year, I have been teaching cooking to young people. I have seen how much the children enjoy learning about and eating vegetables and fruits. When I introduced broccoli to one boy, he said, "This is better than ice cream." I think that many children have not been exposed to fresh vegetables before. It is exciting to see their awakening.
I’d like to recruit retired nurses to replicate what I do at the club. There are Boys & Girls Clubs around the country, and the organization is more than 100 years old. The children come from all backgrounds, and the clubs are great places to teach children about health issues.
About Susan Evans
I have been a psychiatric nurse for 45 years, and health promotion and disease prevention are my main concerns. Retired nurses who have time to volunteer are the perfect candidates to teach young people about healthy choices in food. The cooking program can be successful on its own and can also be a gateway program to teach other health promotion ideas to young people.
