I am Managing Editor of Encore.org for Civic Ventures, where we’re building a community of people seeking encore careers that combine continued income with meaningful work that contributes to the community.

Since 2003, I have served on the City Council in Burlingame, Calif., where I have promoted civic engagement and better communication between our city and its residents. Among the initiatives we have started are a Neighborhood Network emergency preparedness and crime prevention program; a Community Wish List that links nonprofits with individuals who have talents, time or skills to share with them; a computer-based tracking system that gives prompt responses to every inquiry to City Hall; and an annual pet parade.
