My Encore Story

Eight years ago I started the first Fine Arts-Festival of the Heart in the three remaining schools of Cabrini Green, one of the last housing projects in the inner city of Chicago. Each September I have successfully brought together the teachers of these three schools to plan the Festival to be performed in May when 1500 neighbors come to watch the students from these schools work cooperatively to share the stage and their talents. In addition to the Festival I bring ancillary support services to the community in the form of dance, music and drama classes, a literacy project, mentors for students, parent health programs, GED classes and private school opportunities for achieving students. These programs support people as they are displaced from their homes and experiencing the anxiety of dislocation to find support services that aid them in their transition. The arts programming helps students process information in learning modalities other than are offered in the traditional classroom. The Festival is entrepreneurial because of the nature of the community that it brings together encouraging peace and harmony. This work is inspiring because it takes place in three underperforming schools in the midst of gentrification in a neighborhood long known for its gang violence. While buildings are being torn down this programming continues to support the community. The Festival of the Heart has become a source of pride for Cabrini Green. For the past eight years the Festival of the Heart brings this community together to share in joy and remind everyone of how the arts foster peacekeeping.
