My Encore Story
Our organization, Towpath Towers Seniors Computer Club, is striving to bridge the technology gap for senior adults by providing computers, training, and support in the care and use of them.
We saw a disconnect between family and friends, health care and services, and financial management. When computer training is carried out with the specific needs of seniors in mind, they will learn at their own pace, and technology can truly benefit our senior members.
We use current technology specific to the individual’s needs. This minimizes frustration and allows for future learning. The use of a computer can be the catalyst for seniors. It enables them, and gives them the ability to leave their apartments. It empowers them to ask questions, research problems, and communicate with other related groups in society.
Computer education enhances self-esteem among seniors. Even those who learn to surf the Internet also have higher levels of social support, an increased sense of being connected to a community and a more positive attitude towards aging.
We provide a support network to solve challenges faced by seniors when dealing with technology. Many seniors who take computer training are intimidated by the material and the classroom manner of younger instructors. But if a trainer can adjust his/her instructional style to suit the needs of a senior audience, the age of the instructor no longer matters.
