My Encore Story

My encore career started when I became a Peace Corps Volunteer at the age of 64. After a long career in business, I was very ready for a new experience, but not at all sure how to achieve it. I wanted a new challenge and a new field. I wanted to help others and grow at the same time. Peace Corps offered me the opportunity to become a Health Education Volunteer in Mali, West Africa. It was a 27 month commitment, including an amazing three month training period. All expenses including transportation are paid by Peace Corps.

My posting in Mali took me to Balanzan, a village of 1600, south of the capital, Bamako. No electricity or running water were minor challenges compared to learning Malinke, the local language. With the help of infinitely patient teachers and my knowledge of French, I managed to get by. Becoming a member of the community was made much easier by my age. It was nice to be in a place where grey hair commands instant respect! If the first six months were challenging and often difficult, the second year became increasingly rewarding, and when the time came to leave, I actually thought about extending for another year.

Returning to the United States brought new challenges as well. I felt overwhelmed by the pace and by the waste around me, but I had a much better idea of where I wanted to be in retirement. I bought a small house in the woods of West Virginia and found pleasurable work as a substitute teacher. It left time for enjoying life, especially my four small grandchildren.

Then Peace Corps called and asked if I would consider becoming a recruiter. I now have the pleasure of recruiting other adventurous 50+ persons for the same challenge. I invite contacts by phone, 202-692-1048 or email at dschoeneman@peacecorps.gov
