My Work History
I've most recently been a Principal of Knowledge Solutions LLC, a consultancy serving the knowledge industry, principally in the areas of scientific and medical publishing. I have been a leader in the development of new products, particularly knowledge-based new technology products, as well as in publishing and standards technology. Prior to co-founding Knowledge Solutions in 2001, I was responsible for a massive database of online content at the startup public company HealthGate Data Corp.
Prior to that I was head of Publishing at the Massachusetts Medical Society where I was Publisher of the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal Watch, Hippocrates, and HealthNews. I've had quite broad experience in international markets, and was Group Director at the UK-based Dawson Holdings PLC, then the world’s largest information brokerage and subscription agency. Previously, I spent 13 years at Little, Brown and Company in a number of positions, but most notably as Publisher of Medical Journals. In that role I served as Publisher of the North American edition of The Lancet. Other titles in my portfolio included the distinguished Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Annals of Neurology.
I have been a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the New York Academy of Sciences, am past Chairman of the National Information Standards Organization, the
ISO-designated agency for standards in the professional information marketplace. I served on the Enabling Technologies Committee, an international working group of publishers that provided industry oversight of developing technologies, and Chaired the International DOI Foundation. I also chaired the Journals Committee of the Association of American Publishers as well as the Innovations Committee of the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers.
